AWHALWADI, PUNE

Awhalwadi is situated just on the outskirts of Pune near a suburb called Wagholi. Originally an agricultural zone, it is fast transforming into a residential neighbourhood with high rise construction. Its challenges are typical of semi urban areas in Pune. Farmers sell their land to developers, and come into quick and large sums of money mostly spent on large homes and cars. The village, still not within the municipal limits of Pune, has problems with water supply, waste management and lack of primary health care. The only public school in the village goes upto 7th grade. Most families are either from the Awhale clan, with the village named after them or migrant labour that comes from neighbouring states to work on construction sites and live in rental spaces.
